1.水暖工 shui3nuan3gōng plombier

On a 水:shui3-> water(English)/eau (français) and 暖:nuan3->hot(English)/chaud(français) and to finish 工:gōng->work(English)/travail (français).

Donc d'après les Chinois, celui qui s'occupe de ce qui tourne autour de l'eau chaude c'est le plombier! Ils auraient pu généraliser en parlant des canalisations!

电工2

2.电工 diàngōng électricien

On a juste 电:diàn-> électricité! Le mec dont son travail est de s'occuper de l'électricité est l'électricien! Ce n'est pas trop compliqué là! Même moi je comprends!

演员3

3.演员 yan3yuán acteur

On a 演:yan3-> to act (English)/jouer un rôle (Français) et员:yuán-> person(English)/personne(Français). Une personne qui joue est un acteur.

飞行员4

4.飞行员 fēixíngyuán pilote

On a 飞:fēi-> to fly (English)/ voler dans les airs (Français) et 行:xíng-> work (English)/travail (français). Donc la personne dont son travail est de voler est un pilote.

Well these days, we just use "水电工“ to describe them, as most of them knows how to repair your water pipes, as well as your electricity!

行peut signifier "marcher" (to walk) aussi.
it is correct to say that 行is "to work" but in the noun 飞行员, 行does not carry this meaning at all.  it would be more of 飞行(to fly in the air using an airplane or rocket, as long as you're flying in the air with the aide of a tool) and 员 (person).  you cannot separate 飞 and 行in this noun  :)
飞means to fly without any form of aide, so it is usually used for birds and animals.

Yes you're right...
Each character has many meanings...even if it is not always true what I do, it enables me to learn the sound of the character and already learn one of its meanings. Anyway I try to make it clear for my French fellows so they can understand better. Well, i hope so! to my mind, I do it because Chinese is so logical...
In English when you don't understand anything, you say "It's all Greek to me "
in French, we say "C'est du chinois!" grrr
